"I don't love ice cream because I force myself to eat it. I eat it because I already love it!" ~Keith Ferrin
In Keith Ferrin's book, Like Ice Cream, this is the message he says we should have about reading the Word of God. In this thin, ninety-eight (seventy-one, not counting the Acknowledgements, Intro, Appendix's, the blank pages for notes and The About Me), easy-read book, I found many wonderful insights and delightful learning moments.
Instead of Chapters the book is sectioned out by Principals. Like Ice Cream was written for parents and leaders alike. I loved how Keith used real life moments from his own family to teach and illustrate important truths from Deuteronomy 6:6-9. Like Ice Cream was written in a down to earth way. It was written so that people who do not like to read will be able to sit down and enjoy what they are reading and actually finish the book as well. Having had the privilege of seeing Keith speak I could hear his voice all the way through the book.
This book was written for various family dynamics. I was thrilled that Keith used many examples for the busy, soccer game, dance recital, family. It was a nice addition to the book that Keith used quotes from ordinary, everyday parents and leaders. I was also impressed with the list of Scriptures reminding us of who God says that we are.
I have read many self-help and how-to books on parenting and helping our children in their walk with the Lord, but my favorite thing about Keith Ferrin's book; Like Ice Cream, was that in this book he doesn't tell us what we are doing wrong or gives us a list of what we should be doing right. Keith gives step by step examples of important principals and shows us how simple it is to implement them into our own daily lives with our children.
Sometimes what can seem so simple will elude us but as Keith shows us in his book; Like Ice Cream, reading the Word of God should not only be simple...it should be like falling in love...with ice cream!
the TRUTH in LOVE, Heidi
